Hi! I’m Janet Swain Cox, owner and operator of eastern North Carolina’s premier dance studio. I’ve been dancing since the age of 7 and won over 600 trophies over 13 years of Dance and Baton Competitions. I held several National Titles during that time and learned life lessons that still serve me well today. In 1978 I was selected to represent Beaufort County in the Miss North Carolina pageant. It was a wonderful experience…one that I will never forget. When I was 10 years old, I was selected to play Baby June in ECU Summer Theater’s production of Gypsy. I fell in love with the stage…a love affair that has persisted to this day. I love all things “theater” and have endeavored in my career to pass along to my students, not just a love of dance, but a love of the arts.

After years of local instruction, I continued my education at ECU's prestigious Dance and Theatre Dept. I also found time to perform with ECU's Marching Pirates as a Feature Twirler. This truly was one of the greatest experiences of my life. The opportunity to travel all over the USA representing the Pirates is something that I’m very proud of. It was validation that the endless hours of practice had been worth the effort and that with effort comes reward.

After college, I took a position with my childhood instructor, Marie Wallace, and, upon her retirement, took over her Washington studio. I’ve been teaching children to love to dance and to embrace the arts ever since. I feel extremely fortunate to have been able to do something that I love over the past 25 years. I’m now teaching a whole new generation of dancers (some of whom are the children of past students) to love to dance. I am very proud that several past students, including my daughter, have gone on to pursue theatre or dance as a career path. I also have many past students that stay in touch that didn’t choose dance or theatre as a career but who share with me that the time that they spent at my studio passed along valuable “life lessons” to them and taught them an appreciation of the arts as well.

Those times when I’m out buying groceries or dining out or just running errands and I suddenly get a hug and a “I love you Miss Janet” from a student are even more precious to me now than they were 25 years ago. Teaching dance and the arts has been what I’ve wanted to do ever since I, with baton in hand, went into a split on the stage at McGinnis Auditorium all those years ago, looked out at the faces in the audience and announced, “My name is June! What’s yours!”
